If what you're really looking for is games that force you to use your brain, have you thought about puzzle games? Portal and Portal 2 are two of my favorite games ever. For example, in Dark Souls II after defeating the boss on top of Drangleic castle I spent probably 2-3 hours until I figured out the path to shrine of Amana. The only thing in Dark Souls that needs high perception and reflexes is parrying, which I've mastered in DSI but I'm afraid not in DSII yet.Īside from the fights I enjoy how the game doesn't guide you and I found myself (in both games) wandering around without knowing where to go next. Curiously, in DSII I struggled more with normal enemies and just wandering trough the game than with the actual boss fights. When playing Dark Souls II SOTFS I didn't use a shield and was easily able to dodge most bosses' attacks after learning their patterns. Interesting, I have weak reflexes and I never felt like it made the game more challenging. To be clear, it seems like you want the more strategic RPG end.

Hm! A lot of people cite high difficulty because of the challenging boss fights it makes for, or the heavy reflexes needed. I'm open to any game as long as its post 1998 or so, and it must be available for PC. The original Half Life but this is likely because I was playing a shooter at 5 years old and was scared of all the monsters Most RTS games I used to play like AoE or Age of Mythologyĭivinity Original Sin which I'm halfway trough but I can't complete because I lost acess to my shared steam libraryĪll Hitman titles up to absolution, haven't played Hitman 2016 Games that I think fell within this scope:ĭark Souls I & II (haven't played III, waiting for a massive discount on GOTY edition) It can be an RPG or any other genre, I just love thinking and figuring things out by myself and I dislike games guiding me trough every level as if I was unable to think.

I'm basically looking for any game that provides some degree of challenge but isn't unfairly difficult. I don't like Dark Souls for its perceived difficulty which isn't that high but the fact it requires me to learn, investigate and adapt with nothing being handed on a silver plate I remember some of the first games I played were the original Tomb Raider games - With the absence of internet guides and me being 5 years old, every level was an ultimate challenge where using my brain proved more valuable than simply rushing things. The old /r/patientgamers Essential Games Listĭark Souls reminded me of what it's like to use my brain to complete a game, and I really like it Please use flair to display what games you’re currently playing, not a punch line, username, tag, URL, or signature.
